Aiyedatiwa Donates ₦2 Million for Care of Quintuplets, Orders Probe into Mother’s Death

A cloud of grief has enveloped a family in Ondo State following the tragic death of a woman shortly after giving birth to quintuplets, a development that has sparked widespread sympathy and renewed conversations about maternal healthcare in Nigeria.

In a swift response to the heartbreaking incident, Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, donated ₦2 million for the care and welfare of the newborn babies while also directing an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the mother’s death.

The Governor, represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Seun Osamaye, visited the family at Netcare Multispeciality Hospital to sympathise with them and assure them that the state government would not abandon the children during such a difficult period.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Osamaye reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving maternal healthcare and reducing maternal mortality across Ondo State.

She described the incident as painful and unfortunate, noting that the government remains determined to strengthen support systems for pregnant women, especially those with high-risk pregnancies.

According to her, the intervention by Governor Aiyedatiwa goes beyond financial support, as plans are already being put in place for the long-term wellbeing of the quintuplets. She disclosed that once stabilised, the babies may be transferred to a specialised medical facility where they can continue receiving adequate healthcare and attention.

Dr. Osamaye also commended the First Lady of Ondo State, Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, for her concern towards women and children, adding that the administration recognises the importance of providing a safe and nurturing environment for vulnerable children who have lost parental care.

The Commissioner stressed the importance of timely referrals and proactive monitoring in managing complicated pregnancies, urging hospitals to always prioritise the safety of patients in high-risk situations.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mr. Kolawole Kayode, sympathised with the bereaved family and prayed for strength for them to cope with the painful loss.

On the health aspect of the incident, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Adiji Ayodele Ojo, revealed that the state government has already set machinery in motion to investigate the matter thoroughly in order to ensure accountability and improve maternal healthcare services in the state.

He explained that the outcome of the investigation would help guide future preventive measures aimed at safeguarding pregnant women and newborns.
Meanwhile, the Paediatrician in charge of the babies, Dr. Korede Oluwatuyi, recounted the excitement that greeted the successful delivery of the quintuplets before the unfortunate death of the mother.

According to him, the hospital had closely monitored both the mother and babies while taking proactive steps to ensure their wellbeing. He, however, disclosed that the hospital had recommended referral to more advanced medical facilities, including the Federal Medical Centre and the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital in Ondo, though referral decisions can sometimes be influenced by patient cons

ent and family choices.
The incident has continued to generate emotional reactions from residents, with many describing it as both a painful loss and a call for stronger maternal healthcare systems to prevent avoidable deaths during childbirth.

Present during the visit were top government officials, including the Director of Social Welfare, Mr. Adebayo Oyegunwa; Director of Social Development, Mr. Samuel O.; Director of Child Development, Mr. Mefun Tophas; Pharm. Adewale Olanrewaju of the Ministry of Health, alongside aides of the Commissioner.
